Pussy Riot are a three-member female band from Moscow, consisting of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alyokhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29. The 3 young Riot Grrrls were arrested in March due to a performance at Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral in protest against the return of president Vladimir Putin, which sparked controversy. They performed a political act which lasted less than a minute and was basically a kind of “punk prayer” which asked the virgin mary to become a feminist.

Now Russian prosecutors are up in arms and claim it was an offensive act which had the intention of offending the orthodox christian community. The band members have been charged with “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred” and could face 3 years in prison each! Pussy Riot supporters, along with anti-governement protesters have been fighting the bands corner since they were arrested. Hell, even Amnesty International are on their side:

“Even if the action was calculated to… cause offence, the activists left the Cathedral when requested to do so and caused no damage. The entire action lasted only a few minutes and caused minimal disruption to those using the Cathedral for religious purposes.” – Europe & Central Asia Program Director, John Dalhuisen (via The Boston Phoenix)

Tolokonnikova, Alyokhina and Samutsevich have been detained for almost 6 months, however, their wait could potentially be over by August 17th as that’s when the trial will deliver their verdict. Should the women be sentenced to 3 years in prison will say a LOT about todays politics and society in Russia.

This is proof that issues relating to women and politics still exist. While people should be sensitive to other people’s beliefs, this is ridiculous and is showing Moscow is behind with the times with a society vs politics and religion situation. What the hell has happened to freedom of speech? It’s going to be very interesting as to what the verdict will be, as well as reactions from Pussy Riot supporters globally. Will you be checking out the verdict?
