Who Needs Feminism is a great campaign which began in April this year and has become increasingly popular and shared around the web since it began. The Tumblr site is incredibly simple and basically asks both men, women, boys and girls to explain why they still need feminism in society today. The most powerful are usually those who give examples of inequality in the workplace or on the street because it’s proof that gender inequality still exists!
“Feminism is both misunderstood and denigrated regularly right here on Duke’s campus. We, the 16 women of Professor Rachel Seidman’s course on Women in the Public Sphere, have decided to fight back against these popular misconceptions surrounding the feminist movement. Our class was disturbed by what we perceive to be an overwhelmingly widespread belief among students that today’s society no longer needs feminism. In order to change this perception on campus, we have launched a PR campaign for feminism. We aim to challenge existing stereotypes surrounding feminists and assert the importance of feminism today.”
We love this because it shows people that feminism is not dead and is still very much needed in societies around the world. It also educates people to not necessarily stereotype and makes people aware of how the media can label men and women. People also discuss rape which can be a very touchy subject. No-one really wants to talk about it or confront it, but brave young women are coming forward and stating that they need feminism because rape is something that they’ve been close to, or have known someone who has been affected by this and it needs to be discussed.
If you want to be a part of the campaign, then join their mailing list here (we have!) and follow the campaign on Twitter @INeedFeminism. You can even start you own campaign and you can find information on how to do that here. They’re hosting a Who Needs Feminism Week of Action during the week of October 22nd and the more people involved, the better.
